After overwhelming demand, the choice was made to run the
Firepower playfields as the PROTOTYPE VERSION.
This was the way Williams originally designed (and intended) the
playfield, but made changes for reliability and cost-savings
reasons.
Firepower originally had two drop-target banks in front of the
pop bumpers, as well as Starburst-style inserts.
You will notice that the target banks in front of the pops have
been cut for double-duty - they can be used with standard
spot-targets, or
you can perform the drop-target modification without having to
cut your playfield up. Starburst inserts are far superior
to the old
flat-bottomed inserts, as they are structurally stronger across
their face (due to the starburst ribs). Firepower
historically suffered very
badly from cupped inserts, where the centers of most inserts
eventually went concave from the heat of the bulbs.
